Online – Construction Pathway Course

Step Two: Basic C.V.

When writing a C.V. you should think about what your employer may be looking for and you can do that by following the tips below. To the right you can download a free Bacic C.V. Template designed in Microsoft Word.

Or, if you have a smart phone or tablet you can download a free app – search for Free C.V. Maker

TIP 1: One-page design
A simple one-page design with a colourful top section will catch the employers attention while making it easier to read. They will receive many 2 to 3 page C.V.’s and will be thankful for your short, well-presented application.

TIP  2:  Keywords
A top tip is to go through your target employers job advertisement and website and take out important words that can be used to describe you and your past experience.

They may be words such as positive (can-do attitude), motivated (keen), punctual (good timekeeping), health and safety aware (careful), problem solver, quick learner, happy to work in all weathers, experience of operating equipment, machines or hand tools etc.

Are you struggling with what to say? That’s normal! Try out C.V. Text Example link to the left!

TIP  3:  Be honest (it’s a legal requirement), confident, but do not oversell yourself
It can be tempting to list qualifications that have nothing to do with construction, such as web design or fitness coach, but in general, this may go against you if the employer thinks that you are perhaps over-qualified or your passion truly lies in another type of career.

TIP 4:  Make it personal
If you are super keen to work for a company then use their name in the introduction. It’s a sure-fire way to stand out and the employer will be impressed that you took the time to do so.

TIP 5:  Make the most of your skills and interests
Always include skills and interests that might help your application, such as any hands-on, creative or construction based hobbies like DIY, motorcycle repair etc. Also, being part of a sports team could mean that you’re fit, active, committed and a team player.

TIP 6:  Save your C.V. as a PDF
It will be much easier to send via email or social media. It’s best to include the company (you’re targeting’s) name to make it easier to find on your phone or PC  – for example – ‘Thomas Harris C.V. – Paragon Carpentry’.
